5 Tips For A Better Night’s Sleep

Sleep is so important – yet I know that lots of people don’t have the best night’s sleep (me included).

My sleeping needs are very different to my other half, so that does have a negative impact on my quality of sleep – but it is something that I am working on changing and improving.

So, here are tips on how you can have a better night’s sleep – let’s work on this together.

Create A Relaxing Evening Routine
This is something that I’ve been working on for a while as I find consistency & routine really important to a happy mind. I need lots of sleep – so I try to start my routine around 9pm, so I can be ready to sleep by 10. In complete honesty, this hasn’t been happening much lately as life has been a bit crazy, and I’ve spent most evenings catching up on some Netlfix.

But my usual routine consists of doing some sort of stretching. I don’t do anything too crazy, as I don’t really know what I’m doing. But I find stretching in the evening really helps my back as I’m usually sat in awkward positions at a desk or on the sofa throughout the day.

After some quick stretches, I like to do some skincare. This routine varies depending on what mood I’m in and how much of a pamper I need. My skincare routine will be coming towards the end of the month, so keep an eye out. If you’re looking for pamper routine inspiration – click here.

After doing my skincare, I like to get into bed and read. I’ve said in quite a few of my recent posts that I want to get better at reading – so, this has been helping. I read 10 books in 2020 and I have a list of books by female authors that I want to read soon. I also try and drink some sort of comforting drink while reading. This is usually either a hot chocolate or a green tea.

I’ve been trying to journal for years, but I’m rubbish at being consistent with it.

Get Cosy
I always want to be cosy, but especially at bedtime. I am one of those people who wears Christmas pyjamas all year round as they’re always so much softer & cosier. Having comfy bedding and setting the mood with the right lighting & temperature is also super important. If you live with other people, this may mean that you need to compromise in some way – but it’s important that you’re all happy. My boyfriend likes to be cold when he’s going to sleep, whereas I prefer to be warm and cosy. Therefore, I have lots of extra blankets to wrap up in and it’s great!

Reduce Screen Time
This is definitely something that I need to get better at. I can make the excuse that I often listen to a sleepy podcast to try and help me relax. But I usually just end up scrolling on social media instead.

I just love a Pinterest scroll in the evening – I just need to get better at doing it earlier.

Listen To Something Relaxing
As I just mentioned, I often listen to some sort of relaxing/meditative podcast. I don’t really have a full podcast to recommend, as I tend to listen to the same episode as it literally sends me to sleep. Click here to have a listen.

If I don’t want to listen to a podcast, I also quite like listening to relaxing music and there’s loads of great playlists for this on Spotify.  

Helpful Products
Some of these may just be a placebo, but I love using lavender scented products before bed. The Lush Sleepy cream is one of my favourite things to cover my body in before I sleep. I also use a lavender sleep spray and I have a cuddly sloth that has a microwavable lavender inside that I like to cwtch up with.

I know lavender is helpful for sleeping. So, whether for me it’s partly real and partly placebo – that’s okay with me!
